Implantable Contact Lens (ICL)

See your future clearly with Implantable Contact Lens!

Visian ICL, or Implantable Collamer Lens, offers a higher range of nearsighted correction for people who may not be a candidate for LASIK.

Unlike traditional contact lenses that are placed on the surface of the eye, Visian ICL is a lens that is permanently implanted in the eye behind the iris and in front of the natural lens.  This allows for maintenance free vision correction intended to last a lifetime.

Most people can see very clearly within a few hours following surgery. If you choose, you may have both eyes done on the same day. ICL has already helped over 55,000 people worldwide for whom LASIK has not been an option to decrease their dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

LASER VISION CORRECTION  is now in its second decade of helping patients reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Today with so many advancements in this life changing procedure, a wider range of low to moderately high degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism can be readily treated.

Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK),uses the advanced technology and accuracy of the Excimer laser combined with the quick-healing characteristics of a procedure known as Lamellar Keratoplasty. With less surface area to heal, most LASIK patients usually recover very quickly and may not suffer any discomfort. Functional vision usually returns very rapidly. Now in its second decade of use, LASIK has added an impressive amount of precision and safety to the surgical vision correction.

BEYOND LASIK...

Although still the procedure of choice in over 95% of all laser vision procedures performed today, candidates for LASIK must have sufficient thickness of the cornea to allow for the flap to be made with the microkeratome and still have enough tissue under the flap to allow for the proper amount of tissue to be removed. A comprehensive exam and several tests are perfomed before the patient can be considered as a candidate for LASIK. If a patient's cornea is too thin, if a patient's pupils dilates beyond the treatment zone at night, and if they have symptoms of "dry eye", PRK or a newer form of laser vision called LASEK can be an option.

Photo Refractive Keratectomy (PRK) was the first procedure performed with the Excimer Laser to reshape the surface of the cornea to correct vision. A thin layer of clear, protective skin (epithelium) that covers the cornea is first removed completely, after which the laser reshapes the cornea. New epithelium regrowth takes place within a week and functional vision usually returns after a week.

Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis (LASEK) combines some elements of both the PRK and LASIK procedures, and may offer improved healing, reduced post operative discomfort and haze. A thin flap of surface epithelium is made by loosening it with a diluted alcohol solution after which the surface under the epithelium is treated with the laser and the original flap is returned to its position as with the LASIK procedure. A soft lens is placed over the cornea as it heals. Using the epithelial flap as a natural protective bandage with LASEK, instead of completely removing the epithelium as with PRK, may improve healing and reduce postoperative discomfort and haze incidence. More importantly, the margin of safety with LASEK is increased over LASIK as the need for a microkeratome is eliminated.
