Diplomate, American Board of Opthalmology
Pe Than Tin, MD, FACS, one of the Southeast's most respected eye surgeons, has long been recognized for his innovative approach. He began his practice in Chattanooga in 1978. In 1995, he expanded to a satellite office in North Georgia to accommodate many of his patients in the Tri-State area.
In 1984, he became one of the first surgeons in Chattanooga to perform RK (radial keratotomy) for nearsightedness and AK (astigmatic keratotomy) to correct nearsightedness.
Dr. Tin was the first Ophthalmologist in Chattanooga to use the ALK machine to correct the vision of people who were extremely near or far sighted and who fell outside the range of RK surgery. In addition, he used the ALK machine, which involved the microkeratome (a device now used with the LASIK procedure by skilled surgeons). ALK allowed for both the precise removal of the scarred cornea and the donor cornea in a highly advanced combined corneal transplant procedure at Erlanger's Miller Eye Center.
In 1991, long before LASIK was approved in the Uniited States, Dr. Tin completed hands- on skills training at a mini-fellowship course in Toronto, Canada. Over the years, he has closely studied the superior techniques of performing LASIK on both nearsighted and farsighted individuals. He became an investigator for this procedure for the International Society of Refractive Surgery, pooling his results with top surgeons to create data for other eye surgeons and for FDA approval in the US.
Dr. Tin has been performing LASIK to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism since 1996 when it was first approved by the FDA. With the LASIK procedure, Dr. Tin utilizes both the Excimer laser and the microkeratome to surgically correct vision errors. With the advent of innovative state of the art lasers, he offers both the bladeless and the advanced techniques of the LASIK procedure and LASEK.
In 1978, Dr. Tin was nominated as the first designated Micro-surgical Skills Instructor in the Ophthalmology Program at Erlanger Hospital, affiliated with the UT College of Medicine. For 21 years, he spend hundreds of hours of volunteer time training everyone of the Eye Residents in Chattanooga intricate eye surgeries such as no-shot, no-stitch, no-patch cataract surgery and multifocal intraocular lens implantation, LASIK, corneal transplants, lamellar grafts, glaucoma and eye muscle surgery, as well as other surgical techniques.
He has willingly given his time and his expertise to stand by many of his own colleagues in assisting them with with their first procedures - surgeries such as LASIK, Laser Cosmetic Eye Lid & Brow Surgeries and with the No Stitch, No patch, No Shot Cataract Surgeries.
He has assisted many of the eye residents with their surgeries including LASIK allowing expensive tests to be performed at his own office without charge, and foregoing collections to his own office by assisting in the LASIK surgeries of patients who wanted his expertise but chose to go to the residents instead.
He attended a surgical course for correction of Presbyopia in the spring of 2000, which will help in eliminating the need for glasses for reading and near vision. Though not yet approved by the FDA, Dr. Tin is completely trained in the event that this beneficial technique is allowed to be performed in the United States. He continues to keep abreast with the latest and most innovative procedures, however choosing only the procedures that will benefit his patients.
Dr. Tin is Board Certified and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Before coming to the United States in 1973, he worked as an Eye Physician and Surgeon with the World Health Organization as a team member in their ongoing effort to eradicate trachoma, a blinding disease prevalent in hot, dry and dusty areas.
In the ensuing years that he has lived here in the United States, he has consistently traveled to the poorest, remotest areas in Central America and other parts of the continent to give his services as an physician and surgeon, oftentimes performing surgery in mudhuts, elementary school benches put together and many times on church pews.
His practice is built solidly on 98% word of mouth referral, with a patient base that many times reaches to the 3rd generation. He is well known for his compassion and thorough exams and excellent surgical results, and many of his patients have stayed with him throughout his practice even with the constant medical and healthcare insurance upheavals, and many travel long distances to have their yearly exams performed by him.
Dr. Tin specializes in the latest in Vision Correction and Cosmetic procedures such as LASIK, Implantable Contacts Lens for beyond Lasik Correction, Multifocal Implants, Laser Eyelid and Brow Lifts, minimal invasive Facial Lifts, Restalyne, Juvaderm, Radiesse fillers and Botox injections.
